If you’re not a mechanic, you may have heard the term engine mount and asked yourself, “what is an engine mount in a car?” It’s not a part of the car that gets as much spotlight as other engine features, so we don’t blame you. If you’re trying to research more about engine mounts or just wrap your head around the concept, we’re here to help.

What is an engine mount? 3 things to know:

To break this down nicely and simply, we’ve created a list of the three things you should know about an engine mount and its function.

  1. What do engine mounts do?
For starters, an engine mount does what it says on the tin — it holds your engine mounted in place to the car's frame. Not only this, but an engine mount helps to deal with the enormous amount of vibrations that an engine produces, absorbing that movement and giving you a smoother drive experience on the road.

When you’re turning, taking curves or performing other driving manoeuvres, the engine mount attaches and holds the engine securely in place so it doesn’t move around and cause damage.

  2. What are engine mounts made of?
Three main materials go into an engine mount; the metal bracket that forms the skeleton of the mount, the rubber bushings that absorb vibrations from the engine and in some cases, the hydraulic fluid, which helps to stabilise the engine.

  3. Are engine mounts necessary?
Simply put: Absolutely. While things might seem calm and smooth from the comfort of the driver’s seat, a lot is going on under the hood of any car that’s far from serene. From bumping to combustions, high heat and friction, your engine pumps away with plenty of energy to deliver that smooth ride.

Without an engine mount, your ride would become a lot more bumpy and disruptive — almost to the point that the car would be undrivable. Not to mention your engine needs to be securely in place, so that car parts don’t knock against each other, cause too much friction or become damaged because of the vehicle's movements. Without an engine mount, almost no part of your car would perform in the right way.

This is why ensuring your engine mount is in good working condition is so important. If not, it can lead to severe problems for your engine down the road.
