PWR suggest the use coolant filter socks or inline filters to catch foreign debris (such as cast iron metal) from entering the radiator and blocking up the core’s tubes. This extends the life of the radiator and ensures that the radiator is receiving full coolant flow and operating at its full efficiency. Even a partially (10%) blocked radiator can cause an engine to overheat. Filter socks are designed for temporary use over the radiator’s top inlet pipe, ideal for when fitting a new radiator. Inline filters are a more permanent solution requiring to be spliced into the top hose and can be periodically checked.
