A steering damper is basically a shock absorber for the steering that works to enhance 4x4 driving feel, response and comfort, by inhibiting the effects of tyre vibration and steering feedback from the track surface.

Issues caused by tyre vibration and rough track surfaces are amplified in 4x4 vehicles when they are upgraded to run on bigger tyres and with higher lifts, all of which work together to alter the factory steering geometry.
